How the cost is worked out
The total cost of ownership adds the purchase price, other purchase costs, running costs and the interest a loan charges while you own the car, then subtracts what you expect to sell it for. A loan’s principal is already part of the price, so it is not counted twice.
The low and high figures vary energy, maintenance, tyres and resale by 15%. Fixed bills you enter — insurance, the licence fee, the annual test — stay as entered.
Kilometres a year and years of ownership start from defaults you can change. Every other cost stays unknown until you enter it, and an explicit zero means no cost.
For a specific car
Look up its plate: when the model match allows, the report fills in the estimated licence fee and the fuel use calculated from the official CO₂ figure, and lets you save your assumptions on this device.
