Searches and saved vehicles

Recent searches and saved vehicles stay in local browser storage only, and only if you turn saving on. A saved vehicle holds its plate, any name you give it, a snapshot of its report, the boxes you tick in its "Before you buy" checklist, and, if you save them from the report’s cost calculator, its asking price and cost assumptions. Ticks and calculator inputs for a vehicle that is not saved stay on the page only. Deal details saved with an earlier version of the app stay with that vehicle and are deleted with it.

Short-lived copies of public data

To keep lookups fast and working when a government source is down, our servers keep encrypted copies of public registry data for a limited time. The sections of a vehicle’s report are kept for up to 24 hours, and model specifications and list prices, which are not tied to any one vehicle, for up to 60 days. A backup of the basic registry details of every vehicle on the active, two-wheeler, heavy-vehicle and personal-import registers, and of registrations cancelled since 2017 — such as make, model, year and registration dates, without VINs or owner details — is kept for up to seven days after the government publishes them. Copies tied to a vehicle are filed under a keyed one-way value computed from its plate, not under the plate itself.

Vehicle history records

From the day collection starts, we record two things for every vehicle in the government datasets, not only for vehicles searched on this site: the odometer reading recorded at its most recent annual test, with that test’s date; and whether it appears on the Ministry of Transport’s public-vehicle list (such as taxis and buses), with its vehicle type and any cancellation details. We check the datasets daily and add an entry only when a value changes — and, for a vehicle that stays on the public-vehicle list, also once every five years so that its record does not lapse.

The government publishes only the latest values, so earlier ones cannot be recovered later. We keep them so that a report can, in future, show a later odometer reading lower than an earlier one, or that a vehicle was once a public vehicle. A lower reading can point to an altered odometer, but it can also be a recording error; it is not proof of either.

For now we only collect these records: they do not appear in reports, in share links or anywhere else on the site, and we will update this page before that changes. Separately, reports and share links do show whether a vehicle is on today’s public-vehicle list, with its type and any status on it, as the Ministry of Transport currently publishes them; the history we collect is still not shown.

We do not collect owner names, ID numbers, addresses, VINs or engine numbers, and the records are not linked to the people who use this site or to their searches.

Each record is filed under a keyed one-way value of the plate, not under the plate itself, and the readings and public-vehicle list details are encrypted. The records are held in a separate database with its own credentials, hosted by a cloud provider in the United States.

We keep each record for six years from the month of the test (for odometer readings) or of the observation (for the public-vehicle list), after which a scheduled cleanup deletes it. A deleted record can remain in the database provider’s backups for up to 15 days.

Deleting a vehicle’s history records

A vehicle’s owner, or someone acting for the company that owns it, can ask us to delete its history records by writing to the address below with the plate number and a way to reach them. Please do not attach documents to the first message: we reply with the proof of ownership we need, such as a copy of the vehicle licence with the ID number covered, use it only to check the request, and delete it once the request is closed.

Deletion removes every history record we hold for that plate, but it does not stop recording: a later annual test, or a change on the public-vehicle list, is recorded again. The deleted values themselves are not recorded a second time while they stay the same; to know that, we keep only a keyed one-way value of the vehicle’s latest values, from which they cannot be read, until it too expires on the same six-year schedule. Deletion does not change the government’s data, which stays public and continues to appear in reports, or reach the short-lived copies tied to the vehicle, which expire on their own within seven days.

Traffic measurement and abuse protection

We collect first-party page-view, lookup, report-render, share and performance measurements, aggregate counts of clicks on outbound links (such as Huzim) and coarse error categories. We summarize usage by page pattern, language and device class, including successful, failed and cancelled lookups. We use no third-party analytics or session replay. Plates, VINs, report contents and URLs containing vehicle identifiers are not sent to analytics. We honor browser Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control signals. Performance data is retained as aggregate counts by entry-page category and coarse device group, without full URLs or links to individual visitors.

Visitor and session estimates reuse the abuse-protection cookie. We store a keyed one-way value, temporary session state and the last-visit date, with automatic expiry; no per-visitor page or report history. Choices about saving vehicles and search history on your device are separate from traffic measurement.

To block automated mass lookups, we count the different plates looked up from each network address for one minute. The count holds only keyed one-way values of the address and of the plates, and is then discarded.

Share links and third parties

Share links contain an encrypted token only — no plate, VIN, or report snapshot.

No advertising tracking or hardware fingerprinting, and no data is shared with third parties automatically. Only when you explicitly choose to continue to Huzim to create an agreement is the displayed plate sent to Huzim; the report, VIN, price, notes, and any site or user identifiers are not sent.
