What a plate-number report contains
The report is assembled from separate sources, each refreshed on its own schedule. Understanding what every part represents matters before drawing conclusions from it.
- Registration details: manufacturer, model, model year, engine capacity, fuel type, colour and licence validity.
- Roadworthiness test history: test dates and the odometer reading recorded at each one.
- Ownership history: ownership type (private, company, rental, leasing) and the number of transfers — without names.
- Recall campaigns: open manufacturer campaigns requiring a repair at an authorised garage.
- Structural change: any modification to the vehicle body reported to the Ministry of Transport.
- Model specification and importer list price: fuel consumption, pollution rating and the list price for the model.
Why this information is free
The registries are published as open data on data.gov.il under freedom-of-information legislation. Anyone who knows how to query them can retrieve exactly the same records — vehicle-check sites hold no privileged data, they simply present the same datasets in a readable form.
That is also where the limits come from. Anything never reported to the Ministry of Transport will not appear: a collision settled outside insurance, servicing at an independent garage, or damage repaired without a report is not part of the public record.
What a plate check will not tell you
A digital check is a screening step, not a replacement for a physical inspection. It helps rule out problem cars before you travel to see them, and lets you arrive at the inspection centre with specific questions.
- Current mechanical condition — noises, leaks, brake wear or engine faults.
- Collisions that never resulted in a registered structural change.
- Owner names or contact details, which are not part of the public record.
- Liens, charges and insurance status, which the open datasets do not publish.
